HPREC Reading Project (K-3)

Adolescent Reading Project using Phonics Blitz

DIBELS

HPREC Reading Project

Since 2003, the HPREC Reading Project has been providing regional educators with skills, knowledge, and support to ensure literacy success for all students. Participating school districts include:

  • Clayton Public Schools

  • Mosquero Municipal Schools

  • Raton Public Schools

  • Roy Municipal Schools

  • Springer Municipal Schools

These participating schools received intensive professional development and coaching on the 5 Big Ideas, the 3-tier model, assessment, progress monitoring, and curriculum and Instruction.  In addition, teachers received intensive training and support using Lindamood-Bell™ Learning Processes, as well as Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS).

HPREC Adolescent Literacy Project
In collaboration with participating districts and The Really Great Reading Company, HPREC is coordinating and strategically implementing the HPREC Adolescent Literacy Project with the follow schools/districts:

  • Cimarron Elementary and Middle School

  • Cimarron High School

  • Clayton Junior High

  • Eagle Nest Elementary and Middle School (Cimarron)

  • Garfield Elementary (Hatch)

  • Kearny Elementary School (Raton)

  • Maxwell Municipal Schools

  • Raton High School

  • Raton Middle School

  • Rio Grande Elementary (Hatch)

  • Roy Municipal Schools

  • Springer High School

Fifty-five teachers from these schools have received intensive training and support on implementing Phonics Suite™ lessons with fidelity. Phonics Suite™ is comprised of  three effective, engaging programs:   Phonics Blitz™, Phonics Boost™, and Targeted Reading Lessons™.

Phonics Blitz is 40 lessons that teach phonics concepts in a fast-paced, multi-sensory, systematic, and explicit manner.  The lessons improve reading skills of students in grades 4 to 12.

Phonics Blitz helps students who exhibit one or more of the following weaknesses:

  • misread unfamiliar words and words that look alike
  • struggle with reading multi-syllable words
  • skip or add words
  • read more slowly than grade level expectations
  • have poor spelling.

Each Phonics Blitz lesson lasts approximately one hour.  Lesson times vary based on the time it takes students to master the concepts taught and the size of the group.  Completing all 40 lessons usually takes 8 to 10 weeks.  The recommended group size is 8 to 12 students, depending on the level of the students’ decoding deficits.  Lessons can be broken up for classes shorter than one hour, but it will take longer than 8 to 10 weeks to complete all 40 Lessons.
