Certified applicants must hold a valid NMPED teaching license or be able to obtain one through reciprocity. Salary will follow the current salary schedule and the position offers excellent benefits. Transition/Counselor/Vocational Specialist

Job Description: High Plains REC, located in Raton, NM, has an opening for a part-time Transition/Counselor/Vocational Specialist. Contract or Employment days are dependent on member district needs. Travel is mandatory.

Job Goal: Consult with school staff, parents, and students, as well as provide support to students with disabilities who are 14 to 21 years of age regarding transition planning. Provide students, staff, and families with career awareness in vocational and/or occupational subjects.

Sample Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the assessment of students on career awareness in vocational and/or occupational subjects as part of the transition planning process.
  • Assist school personnel in developing transition plans for students with disabilities as required by state regulations.
  • Participate in Individual Education Program (IEP) team meetings regarding the interpretation of transition assessment data, developing a plan, and goal setting according to district and agency procedures.
  • Work with school personnel to evaluate student progress toward the completion of tasks/goals detailed in the IEP.
  • Counsel and involve parents in the transition planning process.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement career awareness-based activities to improve post-high school outcomes for students.
  • Provide consultation in assigned schools to assist school personnel in understanding the transition planning process, as requested and approved by the Director of Programs.
  • Comply with policies and procedures established by federal and state law, New Mexico Public Education Department, High Plains Regional Education Cooperative, and the local districts’ board policy.

Child Find

HPREC provides the coordination and technical assistance to member school districts in meeting federal, state, and local mandates for students with disabilities who qualify for special education and related services. Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) that requires local education agencies to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities, ages birth through 21, who are in need of early intervention or special education services.

The Expanding Opportunities Project

The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) Safe and Healthy Schools Bureau, was awarded a USDE grant to increase the number and quality of school-based mental health (SBMH) providers in high-need schools. By partnering with local education agencies (LEAs), universities, Native American communities, and other state agencies, EOP will increase the number of SBMH providers and access to care for school-aged youth in identified communities.
